OUR MISSION
At The Kiz Lab, Our Mission Statement is Comprised of Four Main Goals
ONE We strive for The Kiz Lab to be an inclusive space. Sometimes in the dance community marginalized identities can be overlooked, forgotten, ignored, or mistreated (e.g., being a person of color, being a person with a disability (physical or mental), being an older/elderly person, being a queer person, etc.). We have established safe space practices that allow people with marginalized identities to unapologetically exist. Simply put: we want to create an inclusive space by allowing those who are most marginalized to be seen and be their truest selves.
TWO We believe in consent. We have created a non-verbal gesture that we teach at all our classes to communicate consent. If someone at our events says “no” to a dance the only response a person can say is “thank you.” We believe in affirming a person’s ability to say “no” because we want to create a space of positive reinforcement when people set healthy boundaries. Sometimes the receiver of a “no” can feel like a no is a rejection of them as a person; when sometimes a “no” can simply mean they are tired from dancing.
THREE The Kiz Lab is known for making good dancers become great dancers. We teach and focus on core concepts and techniques. We have elevated many dancers in the Bay and are well known for our high-level curriculum. We have discovered core concepts within Urban Kiz and teach techniques to ensure that dancers understand the Urban Kiz physically and mentally. We also do exercises like video analysis, drills, and lab sessions where we play with creative expressions of origin movements.
FOUR Our last goal is to cultivate a space where community comes first by ensuring that the people in our dance scene are good people. Please click on “our motto” below to better understand the last goal. We believe this goal is so important we have made it the motto of The Kiz Lab “Be Someone’s Favorite Dancer.”
